1) What we collect

Account info: name, email (school or personal), password (hashed), optional photo/avatar, school/program.

Usage data: groups you create/join, messages you send, files you upload, basic activity logs.

Technical data: IP address, device/browser type, cookies, crash/error logs.

Institution data (if used through your university): roster details (name, email, course/section) as provided by your institution.

Analytics & advertising data (Google services):
If you consent, Google Analytics and Google Ads may collect:

  • device identifiers

  • approximate location

  • page views & feature usage

  • actions taken on the site

  • referrer URLs

  • cookie identifiers (including through Google Tag)

We do not use Google Analytics or Google Ads to collect sensitive personal data (e.g., messages, files, or academic records).

2) How we use your information

To create and manage your account and groups.
To deliver features (messaging, file sharing, notifications).
To maintain security, fix bugs, and improve performance.
To communicate service updates and respond to support requests.
With your consent, to send optional product tips or announcements (you can opt out anytime).

Analytics & advertising purposes (when you consent):

  • To understand how users navigate UniSync (Google Analytics)

  • To measure the performance of campaigns (Google Ads)

  • To load tags and analytics scripts efficiently (Google Tag)

We do not use personalized advertisements for student accounts unless explicitly opted in.

3) Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with:

  • Service providers (hosting, email delivery, analytics) under confidentiality and data-processing terms.

  • Google, when you consent to Analytics, Ads, or Google Tag. Google acts as a processor or independent controller depending on the feature used.

  • Your institution/instructors if your account is part of a university workspace (for roster and class group management).

  • Legal/safety reasons when required by law or to protect users and our service.

  • Business transfers (e.g., merger). If this happens, we’ll protect your data and notify you as required.

4) Cookies & analytics

We use essential cookies to keep you signed in and run the site.

With your consent, we may use:

  • Google Analytics (measurement of usage and performance)

  • Google Ads (ad performance measurement, not personalization unless you opt in)

  • Google Tag (to manage and load marketing & analytics scripts)

You can manage cookies via our consent banner or your browser settings.
You can opt out of Google Analytics at any time using Google’s tools.

5) Data retention

We keep information only as long as needed to provide UniSync and meet legal requirements.
You can request deletion of your account data at any time.

6) Security

We use reasonable safeguards (encryption in transit, access controls, monitoring).
No method is 100% secure; please use a strong, unique password.

7) Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your data, and to object to or restrict certain processing.
If your account is managed by an institution, you may need to contact your school’s admin as well.

8) Children

UniSync is for higher-education students and is not intended for children under 13 (or the minimum age in your region).
We delete any ineligible accounts we discover.

9) International transfers

Your data may be stored or processed outside your country.
We use appropriate safeguards (e.g., Standard Contractual Clauses) where required.

Google may also process data outside the EU/Switzerland under their own transfer mechanisms.

10) Changes to this policy

We may update this policy.
We’ll post the new version with an updated effective date and, if required, notify you.
